Uhura n.
- from uhuru. In one episode of
Star Trek Spock says Uhura means
"freedom", which is untypical of him because he should have
known that this is not entirely correct (the last letter is wrong).
However, he was under the influence of an alien being at the time.
Uhura's first names, Penda Nyota, are both Swahili.
- uhuru n.
- from uhuru "freedom (from slavery), liberty,
emancipation": freedom, liberation, national independence
(particularly) in East Africa [< Swahili < Arabic].
- "Uhuru, also known as the Small Astronomical Satellite
1 (SAS-1) was the first earth-orbiting mission dedicated entirely to
celestial X-ray astronomy. It was launched on 12 December 1970 from
the San Marco platform in Kenya. December 12 was the seventh
anniversary of the Kenyan independence and in recognition of the
hospitality of the Kenyan people, the operating satellite was named
Uhuru, which is the Swahili word for freedom.",

- "To say that our people are genuinely disturbed by
current developments in which the South African regime features with
such dangerous prominence is precisely to express this confidence
and to appeal to them to leave the world and our own people, in no
doubt as to their known commitment to the total liberation, complete
Uhuru and majority rule in South Africa." Oliver
Tambo, "Presidential Address to the Extended
Meeting of the National Executive Committee of the African National
Congress", Sechaba, May 1975.
- Uhuru, by Robert Ruark, 1996.
